John Slattery isn't any Silver Fox
Silver Lake might appear an out-of-place place for a talk to John Slattery, whose "Mad Males" alter ego Roger Sterling epitomizes the urban-clever sheen of mod style. However the New Yorker feels quite in your own home in stylish-awesome California, where he lives while shooting AMC's three-time Emmy-winning drama. Here, Slattery talks with "THR" about his chances for any win this season, last season's pregnancy surprise and just how he still has not become accustomed to smoking "fake cigarettes at 5:30 a.m."The Hollywood Reporter: You'd nearly annually off before beginning season five of "Mad Males" this month. Could it be strange returning to the grind? John Slattery: Yes, this will be our first week of shooting. However the only factor that's strange is returning to the five a.m. morning. We shoot about the east side of L.A., and I have got a location in Santa Monica. Fortunately there is not lots of traffic about the freeway at 5 a.m, but that is the only real factor good about getting out of bed at this hour. THR: With last year's supporting drama actor champion, "Breaking Bad's" Aaron Paul, not qualified this season, do you experience feeling your odds are enhanced for any first victory? Slattery:Your competition continues to be nothing under formidable at this time, making permanently television but a harder honours process. People do mention the truth that "Mad Males" hasn't won any acting Emmys, however i don't believe the cast is that surprised. You cannot predict you'd add too much should you attempted. However I do hope Jon Hamm wins this season. He warrants it. And Vincent Cartheiser? I'm not sure the way the Academy has not recognized his performance yet.THR:Talking about Hamm, his contract was lately extended for 3 more years. So you are basically assured of three more seasons of "Mad Males," right? Slattery:That does not mean anybody can't go tomorrow, believe me. A personality can die, move, get fired. Matt [Weiner] does not tell us what's coming. We obtain a script for the following episode, we sit lower in a table read -- and we are all pretty excited, since the plot is totally new to us, too. It takes eight days to shoot a chapter, a minimum of 12 hrs each day and frequently more. Not really Jon understood Don Draper could be marriage again! One time i needed to tell my real wife (Talia Balsam, who plays Roger Sterling's ex-wife) we'd receive the divorce on the program, sinceI got the script before she did. Which was strange.THR:Roger had lots of intense moments last season, getting drunk and progressively frustrated together with his youthful wife. How difficult were individuals? Slattery:Playing drunk is not the way in which I think about it -- I am playing the scene. And believe me, it's all regulated within the stage directions on our show. What's comforting is the fact that we are such good hands. Even when a plotline is disturbing -- like when Roger used blackface -- you realize Matt Weiner has a very good reason for this. Roger is consuming more, but he's pretty resilient. He's endurance -- a minimum of I really hope he is doing! It's pretty interesting, h2o inside a highball glass and smoking fake cigarettes at 5:30 a.m. in individuals clothes. THR:As well as when Roger is drunk, his test is still sophisticated and urbane. Slattery: That is what makes this show: the subtlety within the language. Nobody ever states what they are really after. You watch these figures chasing after satisfaction without putting on it on the masturbator sleeves. Last season, when Roger got Joan pregnant, he'd married Jane. You would not have predicted that. Joan and Roger are generally married, however their attraction just will not disappear. I am always surprised at what goes on. THR:Previously year, additionally you made an appearance within the feature film "The Adjustment Bureau" and shot two indies. Slattery: Yes. The film "Return" visited Cannes, and that i just finished shooting another indie, "Family Tree." "Adjustment Bureau" was another guy-in-a-suit part. I almost did not get it done for your reason! However with the quality of talent, I could not not get it done. THR:Last season you directed the episode of "Mad Males" where Peggy would go to that downtown party and that we got the very first glimpses of sixties counterculture. That which was that have like for you personally? Slattery:Matt was very generous to allow me direct. It is a real leap of belief. You won't want to function as the someone to spoil it. I am likely to direct a chapter this year, too. Whenever you direct, you are associated with tone conferences, coping with the studio, producers, completely through editing. Obviously, it is extremely hard to act within an episode you are also pointing.THR:People might be surprised to understand you are an enthusiastic surfer, especially surprising since you are a brand new Yorker. Slattery:Yes, you will find spots there for surfing you would be surprised! But it is tough to discuss it without sounding pretentious.THR:You appear just a little embarrassed when "Mad Males" fans make reference to you like a "silver fox" which women help you like a heartthrob. Slattery:I believe a number of that's remaining from standing on "Sex and also the City" and playing among Sarah Jessica [Parker's] men. I am not worrying. But how can you respond?
