Chinese directors lobby for cheaper film tix

BEIJING -- Chinese helmers Zhang Yimou and Feng Xiaogang are lobbying for lower ticket prices to lure more auds, as they attend this week's annual legislature in Beijing as advisers. "I care about entrance prices, let's make it more affordable for people to watch movies in theaters," said Zhang, the "Flowers of War" and "Hero" helmer as he walked into the Great Hall of the People on Tiananmen Square. There were red stars, red flags and red-clad hostesses to escort the 3,000-odd delegates, most of them senior Communist Party cadres and tycoons, plus Zhang, Feng and fellow helmers Feng Xiaoning, Chen Guoxing and Zhang Huijun, prexy of the China Film Academy. The cost of going to the movies varies widely in China but it's not unusual to pay over $7 for a ticket, a chunk of change in a country where the average monthly income per capita is about $200. The filmmakers hope to make a proposal on "support and rectification of the film industry." Aside from greater discounts on ticket prices to help domestic movies, they also want a boost in construction of theaters in second- and third-tier cities. By the end of last year, the number of screens nationwide had exceeded 9,200, up 33% on 2010, while the number of cinemas increased 29% to 2,800, but most of these were in first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The Communist Party recently said that culture was a "pillar industry" to be nurtured and promoted. China's B.O. swept past $2 billion for the first time in 2011, according to the government's film bureau, a 29% hike on the previous year, so senior figures in the film biz carry a lot of weight these days. They also want more efforts to crack down on piracy. The biz reps will join an influential advisory body linked to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference during the 10-day annual gathering, known in China as the Two Meetings. The other section is the National People's Congress, where delegates will rubber-stamp bills set before them by the Communist Party leadership. The chief objective of the confab will be to ensure stability as the Party begins the process this fall of handing over power. Likely candidate to replace president Hin Jintao is Xi Jinping, a movie buff who recently oversaw a deal during his visit to Hollywood that opened up China's 20-film quota on foreign movies to allow 14 more pics in and to give foreign companies a greater percentage of the take. The IT crowd

The Hollywood IT Summit, produced by Media and Entertainment Supply Alliance (MESA) and Variety, was a sell-out event last year on its inaugural outing. It returns today for a soph edition to the George Elkins Auditorium at the Malibu Campus of Pepperdine U. from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with cocktails to follow.Organized by the Hollywood IT Society (HITS) and an advisory board of CIOs from major Hollywood studios, the summit features multiple tracks and breakout sessions. Major areas of focus include studio case studies (best practices), digital distribution models and analysis, connectivity and real-time decision-making, big data, self-service business discovery and exploration of innovative technologies driving business transformation.Variety interviewed three of the participants:Devendra MishraAdjunct professor, decision sciences and marketing, Graziadio School of Business and Management, Pepperdine U.How is information technology changing the entertainment business?"IT has been instrumental in changing the business in many ways. Here are seven of them:1. By capturing the big data of social media networking and enabling near-real-time decision-making.2. Analyzing social media networking and big data to influence purchases of products and services for an enhanced entertainment experience.3. Establishing standards for unique product and service identification and for metadata to be used by the trading partners of the ecosystem.4. Ensuring security and privacy in the network.5. Developing consumer-centric content for the Web.6. Establishing B2B networks among the growing number of supply-chain partners in the digital world.7. Building data warehouses to support the infrastructure needs of the transformational initiatives."What are some current efforts by studio executives to transform the industry?"The digital world has brought the consumer closer to the studio where the Internet has become a ubiquitous channel of distribution. While a Web presence provides product information, its interactivity yields an unprecedented opportunity to build a relationship with the customer. The studios are transforming their businesses across the supply chain of the industry in diverse ways. By integrating customer data from all platforms of emails, social media, Web analytics, display networks and publishers, billing systems, and search engines, marketing executives are able to better manage global advertising programs for films and subsequently for TV and home entertainment by optimizing media placement for short-term awareness and sentiment."Josh C. KlineHead of online service, Final Draft (formerly: strategic business development, Deluxe Digital Distribution)How have advances in IT impacted the workflow of entertainment production?"In media production and post-production, the shift to file-based workflows and digital media has blurred the lines between the skill sets required to work in the field. What used to be the domain of a studio's head of post-production now often tucks under the CIO's purview. In distribution, the assets created used to be analog, then digital, tape. Now we utilize any number of digital 'packages' that are crammed full of relevant information that can be accessed at multiple points along the supply chain. Ten years ago, when I worked at Sample Digital and we brought the Digital Dailies system to market, none of the creative executives to whom we pitched believed we could play back full-screen, full-motion video on their computer screens, let alone distribute it securely over the Internet. Now people take these things for granted."Linda LivingstoneDean and professor of management, Graziadio School of Business and Management, Pepperdine U.What are the uses of cloud computing in entertainment production?"Many entertainment companies have recently produced films that require a lot of computing capacity for designing films and have taken advantage of cloud-computing technologies to gain temporary access to additional computing power. Often the technology demand is only temporary during the development phases of the film."What kinds of companies can take advantage of cloud computing?"Entertainment companies that have established a mature IT architecture and infrastructure are best able to avail themselves of the new opportunities presenting themselves in the business landscape. In Pepperdine's MBA programs, we teach that cloud-based computing, portal technologies and social networking capabilities are only a few examples of technologies that can help entertainment companies become more innovative."How can film marketers use IT?"Companies are accessing and mining the data from social networking sites -- Twitter, Facebook, blogs, Yelp and so on -- to conduct real-time data analytics on their products and services so that they can adjust their marketing and product strategies immediately. The data is virtually free because customers offer it up on the Web for free."HIGHLIGHTS9:15 A.M. Keynote: Business Transformation in the Digital World -- Darcy Antonellis, Warner Bros.9:45 A.M. Mariska Hargitay, Harry Connick Junior. The first time in the extended while, Law & Order: Special Sufferers Unit's Olivia Benson is at a trusted, healthy relationship. So how extended will it last?Law & Order: SVU Scoop: Harry Connick Junior. to see Benson's new love interest"[It] must be frightening as hell on her behalf,In . executive producer Warren Leight notifies TVGuide.com in the relationship between Oliva (Mariska Hargitay) and Executive Assistant Da David Haden (Harry Connick Junior.). "It'll be interesting to find out somebody in their mid-40s which has not always experienced a extended-term sexual relationship with someone for just about any super very long time."Inside our Q&A below, Leight notifies us a couple of from the obstacles readily available for Benson and Haden, how extended he'll be around, and the way Leight thinks the situation is going throughout this transitional year. Plus: Will the show return for just about any 14th season?Which means you are greater than half way making use of your first season around the program. How are things?Warren Leight: NBC has handled to obtain apparent they're pleased with where the show is, as has [executive producer Dick Wolf]. And i'm happy with it too. There's plenty of modifying to existence without Chris Meloni for your show too for fans. I'm glad that individuals didn't just type of pretend that individuals would devote two new males and start by yourself. In my opinion we spent sufficient time in the beginning acknowledging the outlet inside the squad room. What type of fan reaction did you ever hear about adding Kelli Giddish and Danny Pino?Leight: You'll find some fans in the Olivia-Elliot relationship with whom that was really the only reason they were watching the show. And people fans are merely stuck at this time. Creatively, In my opinion the show remains going perfectly. [Since] Kelli and Danny arrived towards the squad room, there is available a lot of flexibility now. ... It's allowed for an array of interesting combinations and new alliances and problem areas. Fans in the show, In my opinion, are greatly engaged.Fans in the Olivia-Elliot relationship? I am unsure what else to accomplish on their own account.Convey more scoop inside your favorite shows inside our Winter TV previewAnd now you must Oliva in the new relationship with Harry Connick Junior. Why was time?Leight: It's my job to thought that as extended as Elliot was her partner, she'd a perfect excuse to not conserve a genuine relationship. It had been a guy whose values were completely synchronized with hers. They were a perfect team, which he psychologically supported her. Therefore if you're frightened of in a very relationship getting a man, it had been a perfect factor because you have everything else but you are able to want, but he's married with five kids. However that he's gone...Leight: Take him away now she will begin to take a look at other males the first time. A Few Things I wanted, inside the Connick character, will be a guy who was simply suitable for her to make sure that it may be frightening to her. It's one factor so far a far more youthful, rookie cop you'll be able to kind of blow them off after. But Connick's character is psychologically open. He's available. He's doing the identical kind of work she does. He's the identical values they does. To make sure that should be frightening as hell on her behalf. How will you start to see the relationship evolving?Leight: Simply because they enter somewhat much much deeper, it'll scare her a bit more. It'll be interesting to find out somebody in their mid-40s which has not always experienced a extended-term sexual relationship with someone for just about any super very long time. I merely thought, "Let's play view of the crutch of Elliot being gone.So what now does she do?" So, we now have seen if she fills up, or possibly conditions screw it up up, or possibly it's allowed to blossom. She does seem like little guarded around him. Will that wall come lower?Leight: Well, they could be sleeping together soon, so eventually they require to get it done. But nevertheless it'll be push-me-pull-you.Have a look at our report on TV's hottest crime mma fighters! How extended can you see Haden remaining around?Leight: Initially [Connick] was restricted to four episodes, but I'm not obliged to kill him off within the finish of people four.He seems being getting a lot of fun. They are being working virtually together, but eventually drama must rear its mind. One factor I'll think are we will not reveal him to become killer. Which I haven't any goal of tragically coming him up in the vehicle or anything such as this.Which type of obstacles would you are looking at?Leight: They may disagree around the situation. She may question his commitment because she's this kind of crusader. In the event you behave as a No. 2 in the NY City D.A.'s office, you'll need political skill. And So I saw her mistaking his political skill for inadequacies in fervor. And clearly, they aren't stated to become concentrating on the identical cases. That'll get yourself a situation thrown from court. The ethical boundary is really a large, huge problem. However also there's this of restrictions in the relationship. If both of you carry out the same kind of stuff, and you're simply always speaking shop - is always that healthy for just about any relationship? So whether he goes or stays, how will you want this relationship to affect Benson ongoing to maneuver forward?Leight: She'll be alert to what she's not allowed herself. I desired to see them as two humans racking your brains on what their second functions are psychologically. That's nice. The show doesn't get to accomplish this too often. For other emotional moments, I hear you're coming back Benson's half-brother Simon (Michael Weston). Leight: Yes, Simon's entering town. A Few Things I wanted because episode is kind of a Remains throughout your day factor, where your hero is caught from the job she must do which huge family crisis. Simon's daughter, Olivia's niece, remains acquired in the household. And Olivia, as much as this time around, didn't have clue she'd a niece.NBC Scoop: Hargitay subscribes for the next season of SVU And the way does affecting her? Warren Leight: She does everything she'll to acquire her niece in the city's promote care.I'm speaking about, she meets the child the first time inside a social services agency, it is therefore heartbreaking on her behalf. And therefore, she enlists Andre Braugher's character to battle the city of NY.That's high stakes.I recognize Wednesday's episode (10/9c, NBC) features a large moment for Rollins (Giddish). Can it be something potentially career-threatening?Leight: She'll deal with some personal demons. Incorporated within the crime they're considering, the SVU office eventually eventually ends up interacting using one of the sufferers who was simply huge gambler. And then we enter into that world, plus it calculates Rollins knows people because world. You must as well expect the show being back next season?Leight: NBC clearly wanted to get the message out that Mariska will probably be back for Season 14. Which I suppose they mean on SVU. All I am in a position to think is my job is always to increase the risk for show. I merely keep focusing on the program which i'll assume, everything being equal, we'll return next season. But it's TV. I've been wrong before. ... We're on NBC which is challenging at this time around. So long as, how does one approach the conclusion of the year?Leight: I've stood a note at the rear of my thoughts since the season began. Which I've that same note. There is a fascinating place throughout the final several episodes to go to, however don't think it'll involve coming back anybody who's left or killing anybody who's there. It definitely is good to begin the summer season knowing where the last episode is. Things can transform and many types of that, nevertheless it need not be considered a bloodbath within the finish.Law & Order: SVU airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC. Watch a preview of tonight's episode below:

Meryl Streep Rejoins the Elite Oscar Club This Season

A couple of days ago, I wrotea postin that we noted thatGeorge Clooney(because of his best actor Oscar nomination recently for"The Descendants") has become part of a top-notch club of males who've obtained 3 or more Oscar nominations inside a length of just 5 years -- which most of them ended up winning at least one time throughout their streaks -- something which Clooney has yet to complete, but hopes to complete on Feb 26.Things I forgot to realize at that time was that Clooney isn't the just one of the year's acting Oscar nominees that has been nominated a minimum of three occasions because the 2007-2008 honours season, however it works out Meryl Streephas accomplished exactly the same task.Because of Streep's best actress Oscar nomination recently for"The Iron Lady," she's now part of a equally exclusive club of ladies who've obtained 3 or more best actress Oscar noms inside a length of just 5 years! While Clooney introduced a mans total to 16 males and 18 streaks (Spencer TracyandJack Lemmonhad two each), Streep brings the feminine total to twenty ladies and 23 streaks. Most amazingly, this really is herfourthsuch streak -- not one other female has several. But, she's won a best actress Oscar only one time which was 29 years back.Even though Streep lost the 2011 best actress SAG Award toViola Davis("The AssistanceInch), and although seven from the last 10 those who win of this prize continued to repeat in the Academy awards, she will have faith from the truth that 14 from the 19 other women's streaks created a minumum of one statuette (three producedtwo) -- five for that third film within the streak (as would also be for Streep). ICM on Monday also promoted eight coordinators to agent status across multiple departments. But there was much chatter in the industry about the prospect of agent departures in the coming weeks. The shuffle comes as ICM undergoes a transfer of ownership to its core partner agents, six years after a majority stake in the agency was acquired by private equity shingle Rizvi Traverse Management. ICM toppers Chris Silbermann and Jeff Berg have been hammering out a restructuring deal since late last year. Sadoff had been eyeing an exit as internal instability widened and infighting between Silbermann and Berg worsened. Brought aboard by Berg more than seven years ago, Sadoff is expected to stay in his current role while the agency prepares to fill it internally. The eight coordinators promoted to agent Monday are Jeff Barry, Bryan Diperstein, Remington Franklin, Laura Haas, Andrew Kurland, Ann Murphy, Eric Skinner and Howie Tanenbaum. 'Pond' makes ripples with BAFTA

Tom Kingsley, left, and can Ho gained a BAFTA nomination for his or her debut film, 'Black Pond,' that they designed for $39,000 and self-launched.Chris Langham in 'Black Pond.'Just a few years from college, Will Ho and Tom Kingsley elevated 25,000 ($39,000) to shoot their first feature "Black Pond," in regards to a family that invites a stranger to dinner, after which finds itself charged with murder as he dies at their table. They launched it themselves last fall, to ascertain if it might make any ripples. Thanks simply to some bold little bit of casting, it did much in addition to that. Following nominations for that British Independent Film Honours, the Protector First Film Honours and also the Evening Standard British Film Honours, the project was crowned with a BAFTA jerk for outstanding British debut. At 25 and 26, Ho and Kingsley would be the youngest-ever nominees for that prize. Whether they beat their better-known (and far older) rivals Rob Fiennes, Paddy Considine, Joe Cornish and Richard Ayoade, it is a gilded begin to their filmmaking careers. At Cambridge these were area of the famous Footlights revue, whose alumni include Julian Fellowes, John Cleese, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ayoade, and "Inbetweeners" stars Simon Bird and Joe Thomas, who have been annually in front of Ho and Kingsley. After their publish-grad show at Edinburgh, Ho spent annually within the Royal Shakespeare Company, a season within the BBC primetime cleaning soap "Casualty." Kingsley began like a runner in a advertisements house, and inside a year had labored his in place to pointing. Within their free time they shot a brief, "Cockroach." A producer first viewed it and offered them $80,000 to create a feature. The sale fell through, however their ambition continued to be intact. For "Black Pond," another college friend, student theater producer Sarah Brocklehurst, assisted them scrape together $30,000 by conntacting everybody they might think about, that they added $9,000 using their own pockets. They requested EIS tax shelter status, and consulted Ben Wheatley, director of "Lower Terrace" and "Kill List," concerning how to create a self-funded feature on the shoestring. Ho and Kingsley created the storyline together, and Ho authored the script, together with a part for themself because the daughters' creepy flatmate. They directed, edited and created the project together. It makes sense an eccentric, aesthetically lyrical comedy of repressed British middle-class mores. "We did not set to create a film in almost any particular style," Ho describes. "We love to items to be funny, but we do not like these to be just funny. We wanted it to feel quite real. Visually we'd no template, which possibly originates from not needing to pitch it to anybody." Getting nobody to inform them the things they could or could not do brought for their boldest decision -- the casting of Chris Langham within the leading role. Langham, who performed a new cabinet minister in BBC satire "The Thick from it,Inch was charged in 2007 of dowloading child pornography, offered three several weeks imprisonment, and had not labored since. "I was of the perception, getting read enough about this, he ought to be permitted to operate,Inch Ho states. "Whenever we were writing the script, his character from 'The Thick of It' was always a reference, so following a couple of other stars switched us lower, we thought, why don't you Chris?" Langham's role has inevitably attracted attention. But Ho states they were not relationship publicity. "We simply desired to get the best film we possibly could. We did not possess a telemarketer setting up money, therefore we did not need to pander towards the cynical, cowardly thought process. It isn't been nice from the personal perspective, because Chris is really a friend now, however i haven't even considered it from the professional perspective." They asked everybody they understood for their cast and crew screening last April simply because they think it is most likely the only real time the film would find yourself getting seen. "But rather we left thinking, that wasn't so bad," Ho recalls. "The crowd reaction gave us the confidence to move ahead.Inch After several distribs switched the film lower, it had been recognized for that Raindance Film Festival. Then Ho and Kingsley reserved 1 week at London's Prince Charles theater in November. The critical response was beyond their craziest dreams, triggering a steady flow of reservations from theaters for Q&As and runs of the couple of days. Ho confesses he's no clue concerning the box office take, but states traders should a minimum of obtain money-back. Now a DVD and VOD distribution deal is incorporated in the activly works to make use of the BAFTA publicity. The pic can get its United States premiere at SXSW in March. Ho and Kingsley are actually firmly around the industry's radar, and settling an offer to create a contemporary adaptation of Voltaire's 1700s picaresque satire "Candide." "All we would like is perfect for anyone to provide us with the cash to create our next handful of films," Kingsley states. Despite their relative lack of experience, Kingsley states he and Ho feel prepared to step up to and including more professional shoot, yet they are detest to depart the restrictions of the tight budget target plan for "Candide" is really a still-modest $2.3 million. "There's lots of waste in conventional production," Kingsley states. "With less cash you've with additional control. Having a bigger budget along with a bigger crew, a person's vision could possibly get watered lower. So accidentally we may have arrived on an easy method of creating films." Ford Will not Maintain New Edge Runner

Whispers flatly refused by production co.This is just one of individuals tales where we update on the rumour that appeared so tenuous that people did not bother to report it to begin with. But when you saw reviews last week that Harrison Ford is at foretells return as Deckard, now you can securely ignore them. Production company Alcon Entertainment has flat-out told Deadline that, whatever Ridley Scott's new Edge Runner works out to become, Harrison Ford probably will not maintain it.Scott had already stated this beautiful unconditionally several several weeks ago, and given Ford's well-known antipathy for that film (he did not arrived at like it such as the relaxation around the globe), the potential of the actor's participation always appeared remote at best. But Alcon's Andrew Kosove reiterates by using a reasonably strident, "It's absolutely patently false that there's been any discussion about Harrison Ford finding yourself in Edge Runner.""What we should are attempting related to Ridley now's feel the painstaking procedure for attempting to break the rear of the storyline, determine the direction we are going to accept movie and discover a author to operate onto it,Inch he describes. "The casting from the movie couldn't be further from your minds now. It's like asking if we are will make heaven red-colored or blue. There's been no discussion about this.InchKosove seemed to be keen to worry that, since many have surmised, Scott isn't planning anything just like a conventional follow up to his 1982 classic. "What Ridley's doing in Prometheusis a great template for which we are attempting to do," Kosove states. "He produced something with a association towards the original Alien, but lives by itself like a stand alone movie."What exactly about this "probablyInch? "Prior to understanding what we are likely to do, I guess you can say yes, [Ford] could [return]," Kosove confesses. "But It is very unlikely."

Oscars 2012: Nominations We're Actually Happy About

Well, we finally know who will be competing for Oscar gold come Feburary 26, and with everyone everywhere talking about this year's nominees, a lot of people are ticked off. So much of the post-nomination Oscar conversation gets swallowed up by the angry cries of snubs and shutouts. While we're just as mad about some of the nominations as you are (No Albert Brooks? No "50/50"? "Extremely Loud"?), there are plenty of nominations that came as pleasant surprises and have us really looking forward to Oscar night. Here is the list of our favorite nominations. Gary Oldman for Best Actor Today is the day many—Gary Oldman included—have waited for. After making a career for himself playing some of the movies' darkest and most memorable characters, Oldman finally earned an Oscar nomination. The Academy must have realized how foolish they looked for passing the legendary British actor over for decades. Perhaps they were waiting for Oldman to turn the volume down, because his role in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is by far is quietest, but nonetheless powerful. "The Tree of Life" for Best Picture/Terrence Malick for Best Director As a rule, the nominees for Best Picture should include at least one film that features dinosaurs. With the exception of Terrence Malick's epic, this years contenders for the top prize represent the categories safest race in years. George Clooney's appeal makes even Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" Oscar-friendly. The Picture and Director nominations for the film and Malick were two of the few instances of the Academy defying expectations today, even if in a minor way. Melissa McCarthy for Best Supporting Actress A snub from the Golden Globes caused more than a little concern that this summer's breakout comedy star might get passed up for an Oscar nomination. Fortunately, that wasn't the case for Melissa McCarthy. The actress rallied for an Academy comeback to earn the nomination she missed out on from the Hollywood Foreign Press. Thus making crapping in a sink for "Bridesmaids" totally worth it. "Man or Muppet" for Best Original Song When "The Muppets" finally returned to the big screen, it was never a question of whether Bret McKenzie's songs would be nominated. "How many?" seemed more valid. The Globes passed him up, something we dismissed as odd HFPA politics, and even though the Academy only nominated two songs total, they picked the right one. "Man or Muppet" stole the show, so here's to hoping we get a live performance on Oscar night. "Drive" for Best Sound Editing It isn't often that we'll get excited for Best Sound Editing, but when we do, it's because that's the only nomination for "Drive." We may eventually get over the egregious oversight in the Best Supporting Actor category (sorry, Mr. Brooks), but if "Drive" doesn't take away one award, we might just lose it. Like, elevator scene, lose it. Which of the Oscar nominations made you the happiest? Let us know in the comments below and one Twitter!

But we did learn before Christmas a corner-faced visage is probably not their actual form."Who's that, within that fit?,Inch asked for Ridley Scott, mentioning to Alien's giant calcified corpse. Robert Downey Jr. Expresses Interest In Tim Burton's 'Pinocchio'

Only two days after Tim Burton announced that he would like Robert Downey Jr. to be the puppeteer Geppetto in his upcoming live-action "Pinocchio" film, the "Iron Man" and "The Avengers" star has confirmed that he would be interested in the role. In other parts of the internet, Television Without Pity's annual "Movies Without Pity" awards show is starting up, Rob Marshall has started talking "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" and Daniel Radcliffe's promo reel for this week's "Saturday Night Live" has us cracking up. It's January 11, and you're here for today's daily news round-up. Robert Downey Jr. Game For "Pinocchio"? It was pretty big news earlier this week when Tim Burton said he was considering directing a live-action version of "Pinocchio" and that he would want Robert Downey Jr. for the role of Geppetto, so it's no surprise that Downey Jr. heard about it. Omelete caught up with the "Iron Man" actor at the Brazilian premiere of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," where he said he was definitely intrigued by the role. "I want to talk to him about it, yeah!" Downey Jr. said. "C'mon, it's Tim Burton." Second Annual "Movies Without Pity Awards" Gear Up Based on the way you've all been busy voting in the MTV Movie Brawl 2012, we figure you all appreciate a good fan-voted awards show. Television Without Pity is starting their second annual "Movies Without Pity Awards" this week, and voting will run through February 12. With categories like "Best Cast In the Worst Movie" and "Least Convincing Screen Couple," how can we resist tossing our vote into the pot? Rob Marshall To Tackle "Into The Woods" Rob Marshall's latest cinematic outing, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," might have been a big-budget action movie, but the director made a name for himself helming big screen musical adaptations. His next project is going to be an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's classic "Into the Woods," which will follow in the footsteps of previous Marshall Broadway adaptations "Chicago" and "Nine." The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Lapine is already working on writing a script for this new film, which Marshall expects to have new songs from Sondheim. ...He's Also Thinking About "Pirates 5" Even though he's gearing up to work on "Into the Woods," Marshall is also thinking about his other Disney commitment: the fifth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film. "Terry [Rossio] is writing it and hes working incredibly hard and he did a draft and rethought it all and started working on it again," Marshall told THR. "I know Johnny feels the same way: He needs to see a script, but he would be happy -- if its the right script -- to put that hat and sword back on." A New International Poster Debuts For "John Carter" Andromeda High has posted the newest international poster for "John Carter." The film's promotion is no longer trying to shirk from the fact that this is going to be a CGI-heavy production with lots and lots of aliens, and we're totally okay with that. Better that than audiences going in thinking the movie is about mostly humanoids like the first trailer seemed to suggest. Daniel Radcliffe's "Saturday Night Live" Promos Premiere Sure, these aren't as funny as Daniel Radcliffe punching Josh Horowitz in the face (here's a GIF to prove our point) but we could listen to him saying, "Chill broseph, I like Mountain Dew and big butts!" in an American accent all day long. Tell us your thoughts on today's Dailies in the comments section below or on Twitter!

Request Matt: Dance, Downton Abbey, CSI, Guilty Pleasures and much more!

Which Means You Think You Are Able To Dance Send inquiries to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter!Question: I heard somewhere that Fox is going to be eliminating Which Means You Think You Are Able To Dance following this season which this year is going to be shaved lower a little. How is this true? This is among the best "reality" shows on television. It's classy, inspiring, emotional, and that i keep being astonished by the quantity of brilliant talent there's available and every season the talent will get better, if that is possible. They are truly extreme sports athletes. Can anything be achieved to help keep this jewel on? - CorinneMatt Roush: It never affects to show more and more people onto your preferred endangered show, but I am unsure Which Means You Think You Are Able To Dance is very ready because of its last dance yet (accidental Donna Summer time reference). So Fox intends to tweak the format considerably this summer time, including getting rid of the weekly "results" episode. I am unsure yet how that will work, and I am unsure they are fully aware yet. (Could not they simply turn it into a more workable half-hour results show? Could not everyone?) So although this kind of chipping away is unquestionably worrisome, I'll hold Fox's entertainment chief Kevin Reilly to his statement over the past weekend that no network's reality franchises - this being my personal favorite, including (most days) the outcomes show - 're going away.Question: After reading through your many posts regarding American Horror Story, it's apparent that you simply dislike this show. I felt similarly in early episodes, however because it began to connect story lines, it grew to become a guilty pleasure for me personally. It got me wondering whether you've any implies that you like which are simply bad in which you overlook the professional critical side individuals and merely appreciate it. What are a few of your faves? - RobMatt Roush: There's bad, after which there's reprehensible, and that i honestly have trouble imagining just one enjoyable aspect to American Horror Story (save Jessica Lange), which disgusted me without ever really frightening me. But that is old news. Obviously I've "guilty pleasures" - who does not? - although typically, I won't feel guilty about something that brings me actual pleasure. Probably the most apparent current candidate for guilty-pleasure status right now is ABC's Revenge, that we find crazy and frequently comically badly behaved, however it doesn't have pretensions about being not a juicy, go-for-broke cleaning soap, so that as it found its voice, the formula of Emily-takes-lower-an-enemy has fortunately broadened to provide her some truly memorable antagonists within the psycho Tyler (whose farewell, for the time being, would be a series high point a week ago) and also the "real" Emily-now-Amanda, a vixen from the greatest low order. It jogs my memory from the heyday from the prime-time cleaning soap, which really were guilty pleasures of mine, most memorably Knots Landing, that we loved and throughout probably the most primitive VCR era managed to maintain, whilst doing my critical duty concerning the more culturally important NBC dramas that broadcast for the reason that same Thursday period of time, including Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law. I suppose I'd also classify my couple of reality destructive addictions, just about all in the competition genre (Top Chef, the approaching Face Off on Syfy, etc.) as guilty pleasures, because I can not really justify time I devote to them as not relaxing and enjoyable. No shame for the reason that. So that as formerly talked about, a show like Which Means You Think You Are Able To Dance isn't a guilty pleasure. It's among the best shows on television. I sure hope Fox does not spoil it.Want more Matt Roush? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!Question: I'm wondering knowing anything concerning the second season of BBC's up-to-date Sherlock. Yes, it broadcast on BBC One out of Britain a week ago. Will we must wait six several weeks to determine it in the usa on PBS? - JeffreyMatt Roush: Can you be satisfied with four? Sherlock will go back to the Masterpiece selection in May, and I have heard only good stuff to date. I understand waiting for is irritating, but Masterpiece has a tendency to save its key mystery franchises for spring and/or summer time. And extremely, who are able to complain, as lengthy as Downton Abbey is on? Talking about which:Question: Loving Downton Abbey and that i heard somewhere that this can be a limited series. If only there have been more episodes inside a season. I like all of the cast and also the story lines. Are you aware if there's an finish around the corner or maybe they intend on more episodes next season? All the experts appear to love it along with the public. The rankings happen to be excellent within the United kingdom, but I don't know how rankings have been in the U.S. and just how that actually works. I would like to visit a dozen or even more episodes next season, like our cable series. Are you currently an admirer? - ElMatt Roush: Downton Abbey is really a hit on sides of water-feature, and you will see another season, that is induce to celebrate - just in case you skipped my overview of the 2nd series, I am a huge fan, and also the first season rated second on my small Top Ten list for 2011. The recognition from the show is not related to the number of episodes air it is a purpose of the type of British TV, which (usually to the benefit) has a tendency to produce less episodes a season compared to more-is-more American way. I am Comfortable with a set such as this departing us wanting more, because what there's of it's so very satisfying.Question: I have seen reported the second season of Downton Abbey will air in seven episodes on PBS, however in the United kingdom, it had been eight episodes along with a two-hour Christmas special. Will PBS be showing everything, such as the special? They edited season 1 together oddly, therefore it is certainly possible they are going that route again, but they have been pretty uncommunicative about them. - JessicaMatt Roush: The foremost and last nights from the PBS run mix two episodes - using the final evening on February. 19 being the 2-hour Christmas "special" - so there is nothing being lost within the translation here. (There might be some minor edits, although not towards the extent of last season, that was blown way to avoid it of proportion.)Question: Is George Eads departing CSI? He's hardly been in this year and that he wasn't around the last episode prior to the break. - ConnieMatt Roush: Not too I am aware, even though I will not keep on contract discussions, I'd be amazed if he's considering an exit at this time. I recieve that you are an admirer, but a real possibility check is needed. This is a very busy transitional season for CSI, presenting a vital new cast member (Ted Danson) very effectively, while lounging the footwork for among the originals (Marg Helgenberger) to go away later this month. Wonderful that happening, it's only natural for that relaxation from the ensemble to recede a little in to the background. I am sure Nick's time can come again.Question: It appears like all time I write, it's to complain about NBC, and also the year isn't altering that. I had been speaking with we think it's feasible that the Peacock has not broadcast and created a quality show (non-reality/news) since 1999 when SVU and also the West Wing first showed. How's this possible? During the period of 12 years what you know already that accidentally they'd have the ability to develop some quality programming. It appears like whoever runs NBC is really scared of adhering having a bad show too lengthy they close the lid on on shows the moment they falter, or perhaps in the situation of Law & Order versus. Law & Order: La simply have a situation of terrible decision-making. I simply do not understand the way a company that's so excellent at developing shows for his or her cable network (USA) can't decipher it for his or her flagship. Do you consider that because of the absence of creative programming, NBC could be smart to abandon creative programming altogether and be strictly reality and news-based programming? - ChipMatt Roush: Paradise forbid. Just take a look at NBC's current Monday selection, and let me know anybody warrants per week filled with that. However ... While NBC's worries are very well recorded and often self-caused - especially throughout the Zucker era, and also the network may never live lower that Jay Leno prime-time debacle - this overgeneralization that NBC is not of merit is unfair. A number of NBC's Thursday comedies are justifiably acclaimed, though not mass appeal as with the glory times of Buddies, Seinfeld and can & Sophistication, and until Modern Family arrived, 30 Rock (finally coming back now) was the honours-show darling. There has been numerous noble failures within the last decade, the wonderful Boomtown for example, scattered one of the burdensome poor performers, and presently I'd put Being a parent for the reason that classification among the couple of solid network attempts in the family drama recently. Plus, NBC has a couple of the greater interesting midseason experiments this season - Smash, that is obtaining a huge marketing launch, and Awake (when they don't finish up being too frightened of it) - so rather than condemning the network towards the scrap heap, let us project some careful optimism by using the brand new entertainment boss and also the new corporate proprietors, things may gradually start to change. But it is not apt to be easy or pretty.Question: I had been watching a chapter of methods I Met Your Mother from last season yesterday which involved Robin's "large crush." In the finish from the episode, Narrator Ted stated that her crush would return into play which there is "more about that later." We are about midway in to the year also it does not appear that Robin's crush is returning in the near future. Did the authors ignore this narrative, or did they just choose to use another direction using the show? - LaurenMatt Roush: Oh, you never know? I am so frustrated using the teases about this show. The very best I will tell, from a job interview last summer time, is the fact that Michael Trucco (who performed the crush) wasn't as available because the producers had wished, due to his role on USA Network's Fairly Legal, which might let you know that Robin got saddled using the totally unfunny love interest of Kal Penn this year. Which is not to express the crush will not return sooner or later for an additional payback or punchline, given that they did arrange it. But for the time being, with Robin's career apparently going to remove again and her infertility subplot getting been revealed, she's plenty to help keep her busy.Question: Pretty Little Liars and also the Laying Game came back a week ago from hiatus. Could it be just me, or could they be all of a sudden soapier, as shown by such figures as Hanna's father (and the new bride) in PLL, and Annie "Rebecca" Sewell in TLG "coming back to town" to disrupt the lives of individuals with whom we have become familiar to date. Did these shows get new runners, or are ABC Family's "teen mysteries" turning out to be "teen soaps?" - HalMatt Roush: When were these shows not soaps? Their premises might be built about central mysteries or quests, when you are in no hurry in conclusion individuals central tales - otherwise the show's over - new figures and new complications will always be being introduced. Much like inside a cleaning soap opera.Question: On Not so long ago, what's Snow Whitened completed to the Evil Full on her to visit such measures to punish her? - KMatt Roush: The important thing word here's "evil." Regardless of who's telling the storyline, the queen's murderous ire toward Snow Whitened is about envy, jealousy and irrational spite. Within this version, the curse may be the queen's method of denying her enemy a contented ending. For the time being. Besides, what fun will it be when they really got along?Question: Okay, I believe that the cancellation of Prime Suspect is final and there's no saving this show. However for individuals people who really grew to become thinking about these folks, can there be any chance we will begin to see the final couple of episodes? - KathyMatt Roush: Mark your calendar for Sunday, Jan. 22. NBC will melt away the ultimate two instances of Prime Suspect against Fox's broadcast from the NFC Championship game (leading right into a special The American Idol Show). Not ideal, but much better than not showing them whatsoever, that is what has a tendency to occur to shows with this particular type of rankings. That's all for the time being.
